Flu season creeps up every year, and every year the same questions come up at the pharmacy counter: When should I get my shot? Does it hurt? Will my insurance cover it? Here's the short version.
When to get vaccinated
Health authorities generally recommend getting a flu shot in early-to-mid fall, before flu activity picks up in your area — though it's rarely too late to benefit from one later in the season. If you're not sure where you stand, ask us when you're in.
Who should get one
Most people 6 months and older are encouraged to get an annual flu shot, with a few exceptions your pharmacist or doctor can walk you through. It's especially worth prioritizing if you're an older adult, pregnant, caring for a young child, or managing a chronic health condition.
What to expect at the pharmacy
Walk in most days — no appointment necessary. Bring your insurance card and a photo ID. The shot itself takes just a few seconds, and most visits, paperwork included, are done within 15 minutes.
